It was easy to setup, fast even over internet connections and stable.

For actual remote access of the desktop virtual or physical of a linux machine I have had good experiance with X2go.
#MOBAXTERM EMACS SOFTWARE#
Easily one of the best pieces of software I've got. My personal favourite for connecting from a Windows box is MobaXterm.
#MOBAXTERM EMACS INSTALL#
You just need to install an X server - I recommend the last public release of XMing, which is free-as-in-beer, as much as I recommend anything - and check the by-default-unchecked "Forward X11" box in PuTTY. BTW, it's clunkier, but you can totally do the X forwarding thing from a Windows machine too. It's good stuff I use it professionally which is not free, but is worth it. Downside - you aren't actually remote controlling an existing desktop and existing collection of open apps on boxone, you're just spawning a new instance of the app in this example, thunderbird. Upside - no weirdness with trying to fit a desktop into a windowed app. I've pushed policy about as far as I can go without actual running of tests, so now the fun part begins. Though it's entertaining to see our Fortigate monitoring shit itself with alarms from me pulling updates. Cool, I'm playing with Kali a bit and will probably use it. I didn't need it often, but when I did, I really needed it. I'd use the windows rdp client to access the host and get the gnome desktop, then open a terminal to ssh with x11 forwarding to the host where I needed to run the installer or fire up Firefox and do what I need. I used xrpd when I needed to run a webbrowser or gui based installer inside the data center. On windows as a client, I've used xrdp server on the linux box and rdp on the windows client. On my Mac I use x11 forwarding from terminal. I may just lack the vocabulary for what I want to do in Linux. X forwarding is where its at when you want a remote GUI. Does anyone have a good way to get a desktop session with the smoothness of RDP into a Linux workstation? I use XRDP. I simply remove the other two, so I don't be bothered with them showing in my apps search. My quick searching seems to indicate Linux is still using VNC for remote desktop, which unless it's drastically improved is pretty bad. I personally rely on gnome-terminal even for advanced usage. Gnome-terminal does not seem to have this feature. If a program is outputting a significant amount of data to the terminal emulator, fast scrolling can result in a noticeable performance boost.
#MOBAXTERM EMACS UPDATE#
This causes the terminal emulator to not always update the window when the content changes. By default, urxvt uses a feature called fast scrolling. Gnome-terminal is generally more of a resource hog than xterm and rxvt.Īlso, gnome-terminal's install size is generally around ten times larger than xterm's. To be Desktop Environment independent as much as possible, I would choose lxterminal. For Kubuntu the default terminal is konsoleand for Lubuntu is lxterminal. If you are using Ubuntu, you should also have gnome-terminal installed.

XTerm is The main difference between XTerm and Terminal is that the gnome-terminal has more features, while XTerm is minimalistic though it has features that are't in gnome-terminal, but they are more advanced. Terminal is, in Ubuntu default software, the gnome-terminal. I hate always choosing randomly and thinking about what I did. I'm an average home user, but still sometimes use terminal for simple tasks. Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers.
